Brain and Learning

Teaching Smarter with the Brain in Focus
Even the best teachers miss opportunities to maximize their students' learning. No matter what the subject or content area, teaching with the brain in mind will elevate achievement for all learners. In this teacher-friendly workshop, you will learn how to design lesson plans that apply brain research in the classroom. And you will leave with proven strategies and best practices to use in the classroom the very next day.

Academy for Training of Trainers
The Brain, Learning, and Lesson Design: A Teacher-to-Teacher Approach to Transforming Instruction
Using what we know about the brain and learning can help transform practice; however, we need more highly knowledgeable advocates in the field who can teach and coach colleagues. This intensive four-day train-the-trainer program equips teacher leaders with materials, workshop outlines, research-based practices, and a wealth of strategies to train and guide others in their schools and/or school systems. It is intended for teachers, curriculum specialists, and administrators who are in leadership roles, serve as instructional coaches, and oversee or provide professional development.

The Empty Desk: Why We Lose At-Risk Learners and How Brain-Compatible Teaching Can Help
Every day, teachers are challenged to meet the educational needs of at-risk populations. With ineffective teaching methodologies, high failure rates, and rampant absenteeism, students and teacher both end up stressed and frustrated. Findings from brain research can help to explain why at-risk students struggle to learn. And incorporating brain-compatible teaching strategies can transform an ineffective classroom into an engaging learning environment. Participants will learn keys to brain-compatible lesson design and receive templates for use in the classroom.

How Exercise, Learning and the Brain Can Transform Teaching from the Inside Out
Exercise improves attention, increases motivation and reduces stress. When students participate in physical activity, neurons are activated and memories of new information are solidified. But too often, students shun exercise and teachers find it challenging to get students in gear—not only in health/PE classes, but in other classes, as well. In this interactive session, learn how to apply the science of exercise to increase achievement.

Leading Smarter: the Brain, Learning, and Lesson Design
Principals and instructional coaches play a critical role in supporting teachers as they plan lessons, assess student progress, and differentiate based on student performance. This workshop reveals how brain research can help your teachers to transform their classrooms—and how you can guide and encourage them in incorporating new strategies to optimize learning. Based on years of experience working with instructional coaches, the workshop will teach participants criteria for brain-compatible teaching and offer templates they can share with teachers.

Differentiation

Differentiation in Practice: Instruction for Maximum Learning for All Students
For differentiation to work, teachers must make it a focus of brain-compatible lesson design that incorporates student readiness levels, interests, and learning styles. In this hands-on workshop, teachers will gain a better understanding of differentiating based on content, process, and product. Participants will review sample tiered lesson plans and a variety of assessment tools and will receive templates for use in the classroom.

Development Thinking

Building Higher Order Thinking into Content Instruction
Are teachers just teaching to the test? Are rote learning and lecture the norm? Teaching doesn't have to be a talk-at-the-student scenario. Findings from brain research help us understand how to get students to think, how connections are made, and how higher-order thinking activities can improve achievement. Participants will receive criteria for a "thinking classroom" and a survey to assess the degree to which their instruction promotes high-level thinking. The "new Bloom's Taxonomy" will be modeled. Teachers will take home numerous new strategies from this highly engaging presentation.

Teaching At-Risk

Leadership Development

Maximizing the MBTI
Parents feel an introvert principal isn’t friendly. . . . Teachers sigh that an "FP" doesn’t follow through. . . . The central office "NT" administrator is hard to get on board. Every leader has his or her own style—and every style has potential pitfalls. This workshop offers fresh insight into the MBTI to help educational leaders enhance their working relationships. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of their own MBTI results and their strengths and weakness as leaders and administrators. The workshop emphasizes the idea that forewarned is forearmed: by understanding potential problems, you can learn how to prevent them.
